UK Experts – Year 2020

Claire Storey is a literary translator based in the UK working from Spanish and German into English. She has a particular interest in children's and YA books and co-edits the World Kid Lit Blog, highlighting the importance of translated books for children. She was shortlisted for the 2020 Goethe-Institut Award for New Translation and in 2019 she received a Special Commendation from the Institute of Translation and Interpreting in the ITI Award category for Best Newcomer.

Rahul Bery translates from Spanish and Portuguese into English and is based in Cardiff. He was the British Library's translator in residence for 2018-2019, and his debut full-length translation, of David Trueba's Tierra de Campos is out with Weidenfeld and Nicolson in 2020.

Hispanophile Gary McKeone is one of the two representatives nominated by BCLT who rotate to sit on the panel, so he knows the project well. He has worked in literature at London's South Bank Centre, with Field Day Theatre Company in Ireland and as Literature Director at Arts Council England. He has been a Board member of various literature organisations and currently works as Programme Director at St George’s House, Windsor Castle.

Laura McGloughlin has been a freelance translator from Spanish and Catalan since completing a Masters in Literary Translation at the University of East Anglia. She has translated novels, plays, short stories, poetry and children’s literature by authors including Lluïsa Cunillé, Maria Barbal, Flavia Company, Maite Carranza, Joan Brossa, and Antonio Hill Gumbao. She is a reader for various UK publishing houses and an occasional assessor for English Pen’s Pen Translates programme, as well as a commercial manager for Waterstones Booksellers.

Federico Andornino is Editorial Director at Weidenfeld & Nicolson, the literary imprint of the Orion Publishing Group, where he commissions literary fiction with an edge, LGBTQ+ literature, graphic novels and fiction in translation. Recent novels in translation include ROLLING FIELDS by David Trueba (translated byRahul Bery), HEAVEN AND EARTH by Paolo Giordano (translated by Anne Milan Appel) and OLGA by Bernhard Schlink (translated by Charlotte Collins).
