Josep Maria Rovira Belloso was born in Barcelona in 1926. He graduated in Law in 1948 and was ordained into the priesthood in 1953. In 1956, he earned his doctorate in Theology from the Pontificia Università Gregoriana of Rome with his thesis entitled La visión de Dios según Enrique de Gante (which was published in 1960) directed by the Jesuit theologian Joan B. Alfaro. He has been a Professor of Theology at the Department of Theology of Catalonia since its foundation in 1967. Over the last nineteen years, he has collaborated with the Parish of Santa Maria del Gornal in l’Hospitalet de Llobregat. He has been an emeritus professor of Theology since 1996, and, until 2001, he has been the rector of the parish of Mare de Déu dels Àngels de Barcelona.
