Overcoming Adversity
Luis Rojas Marcos was born in Seville in 1943. In 1968 he emigrated to New York where he has lived ever since, dedicating himself to medicine, psychiatry and public health. In 1992 he was appointed head of Mental Health, Alcoholism and Drug Dependency Services for the municipality of New York. From 1995 to 2002 he managed the Health and Public Hospital System of New York. He is currently professor of Psychiatry at the University of New York and member of the city’s Academy of Medicine. Notable amongst his Spanish language books are La Pareja Rota, Las Semillas de la Violencia (Espasa Essay Prize), Nuestra Felicidad, La Fuerza del Optimismo, La Autoestima, and Corazón y Mente, a collaboration with the cardiologist Valentín Fuster.
