Lazaro was born in Salamanca, right by the Tormes river. He was very poor and had to take care of himself from a young age. He didn't live in a happy world, but he was clever and cunning and he found ways to get by... Following on from this, Lazarillo de Tormes presents in autobiographical format the experiences of a young boy whose poverty forces him to work for many masters and use his wits to avoid dying of hunger. After the death of his father when he is still very young, his mother hands him over to a blind man so that Lazarillo can earn a living as his companion and guide. An anonymous classic of Spanish literature adapted for young readers by José María González-Serna with eye-catching and amusing illustrations created specially for this edition by Carlos de Miguel.
