Empar Fernández (Bcn, 1962) alternates teaching with writing, both fiction and non-fiction. Her first novel, Horacio en la memoria (Remembering Horacio) won the Premio Cáceres. In 2004 she began collaborating with Pablo Bonell Goytisolo and they published Cienfuegos, 17 agosto (August 17th), Las cosas de la muerte (The Thing About Death), Mala sangre (Bad Blood), Un mal día para morir (A Bad Day to Die) and La mirada infinita (The Infinite Gaze). El loco de las muñecas (The Madman with the Dolls) was a finalist for the IX Premio Unicaja de Novela Fernando Quiñones. After that, other publications include Hijos de la derrota (Sons of Defeat), La cicatriz (The Scar) (Premio Rejadorada de Novela Breve) and Mentiras capitales (Capital Lies). She was also a finalist for the 2013 Medellín Negro and the Ciudad de Carmona 2014 prizes. La última llamada (Last Call) was a finalist for the Valencia Negra 2015 crime writing prize. Her previous novel, Maldita verdad (Damned Truth) (2016) won the Premio Tenerife Noir, the Cubelles Noir and was a finalist for the Hammet prize for the best crime novel in Spanish.
