Robinson Crusoe: A Graphic Novel Inspired by Daniel Defoe's Work
Ajubel (Sagua la Grande, Cuba, 1956). In 1987, when Ajubel found himself at the height of his popularity as a cartoonist, we engaged in a long conversation which became a published interview in the monthly cultural magazine El Caimán Barbudo. In the final part of the text, Ajubel told me about himself: "...about me... I think I am drawing a lot, but not always in the way I want to. I feel that there isn't enough time to do everything I want to. And I believe that my mind is full of projects, some of which are unattainable, but which enable me to dream. You also live through these hopes". Like Defoe's character, the illustrator drew on all his reserves (concentrated in his particular talent) and turned the solitary island of exile into fertile ground, from which he has now harvested ripe fruits from the elusive tree of recognition and success.
