Mother of milk and honey
Najat El Hachmi was born in Morocco and has lived in Catalonia since the age of eight. Having studied Arabic at the University of Barcelona, she is a contributor to both press and radio. The strange sense of feeling a part of two places and a desire to bring them closer together, led her to write Jo també sóc catalana (I Am Also Catalan) (Columna, 2004). Her first novel, L'ultim patriarca (The Last Patriarch) (Planeta, 2008) won the 2008 Premio Ramon Llull, the Prix Ulysse and was a finalist for the 2008 Prix Méditerranée étranger. La cazadora de cuerpos (The Body Hunter) was published simultaneously in Catalan and Spanish by Columna and Planeta, in 2011. She also edited and translated Cuentos libertinos del Magreb (Libertine Tales from the Magreb) (Planeta, 2012).Her novel La filla estrangera (The Foreign Daughter) won the Premio BBVA Sant Joan de Novela and the Ciutat de Barcelona for fiction in Catalan. Mare de llet i mel (Edicions, 62 - Editorial Destino, 2018) is her most recent novel.
