Carolina, the main character and narrator of the novel, gives us a window into her emotions and feelings through her artistic sensibility that is both sensitive and vulnerable. She is also an excellent observer who can appreciate the slightest nuances in the relationships between members of her own family - her brother Guillermo, and her mother who is bedridden and lying in hospital deprived of intellectual stimulus and who has probably lost her memories. It is precisely this relationship between mother and daughter that awakens an evocative force in Carolina so creating the melancholic atmosphere that provides the materials to compose "Poppies in October".
