"I'm your sister, Irene." Sixteen years after abandoning his family, Daniel receives this message on Facebook. His past is about to interrupt his present life and make him question his motivations for not having gone back. In the summer of 1999, Daniel a young journalism student in Madrid called from Edinburgh to tell his step-mother, Maribel, and his half sister, the six year old Irene, that he was never coming back. In the Spain of Expo, High Speed Rail (AVE) and the Olympic Games, Daniel knew that his father - already dead - and his second wife, Maribel, a rising star in the ruling party, were involved in an orgy of corruption. The thing that Daniel didn't think about was how his decision not to come back left his sister Irene suddenly bereft of the only adult support in her young life. He certainly hadn't stopped to consider how entering fully into adult life means confronting consequences - alone.
