An anthropological critique of modernity in its path in colonial India. Pániker questions many of the historical or social assumptions that have been rolled over on Southern Asia. Special attention is paid to the Aryan myth, Indo-islamic history, the colonial period and the construction of Hinduism. Unlike other postcolonial approaches, Pániker does not place the Indians as passive recipients of foreign impositions.
