“Alfonso Zapico’s graphic novel Dublinés provides a witty and intuitive guide to the life and times of James Augustine Aloysius Joyce. Required reading for anyone who believes that Joyce is too serious for them”. (Lise Jones)
Asurian Alfonso Zapico, who won the best newcomer award at the 2010 International Comic Fair in Barcelona, has for three years submerged himself in the creation process for Dublinés, a graphic novel centred on the life of James Joyce, which covers all the moments, conversations, hardships and adventures which contributed to the making of one of the great figures of the 20th century. The background to this very ambitious project can also be seen in La Ruta Joyce, an exhibition which has toured various Spanish cities such as Barcelona, Madrid and San Sebastián since April 2011.
A rigorous work of documentation, given form in vignettes, this story is dotted with multiple anecdotes, as well as a captivating train journey through the cities of Dublin, Trieste, Paris and Zurich, where this universal Irishman left traces of his life.
