Madelaine, a thirty-six year old young doctor, has to return to the home of her ancestors, the Martínez Durango family, in San Gabriel after the death of her Aunt Rosa. The Durangos are the principal family in the village and own most of the land and the more prosperous businesses but an old legend of woe hangs over them.
For Madelaine, who always disliked the house and everything around it, her return means coming face to face again with her other aunt, Clara - a domineering old woman clinging on to a world that no longer exists - and with her own past. A dark past harbouring too many unresolved questions: what happened to her grandmother Olivia, who was erased from family history? Why did her mother disappear without even saying goodbye to her? What bound her mother to her aunts?
