Young Erhard, from a well off German family and a close friend of Heinrich Himmler, is sent to Poland as a Nazi spy. He disguises himself as a Jew, even circumcising himself, and enters into a world of stratagems, manipulations, betrayals and deceit that end most unexpectedly. His link to the German National Socialist Party and his mission allow the reader to learn in detail about the arguments that brought Hitler to power and reveal the socio-political and cultural situation of Poland before the German invasion and outbreak of the Second World War. “The Shoe with a Broken Tongue” is also a moving love story between Jewish Helena and Arian Erhard, who belong to opposing worlds at one of the most hostile moments in history.
