When she was little more than a child going to look for water at the oasis, Maria (or Meryem) could never have imagined how much her life would change. Out there in the Sahara, she was happy. Until the caravans stopped arriving and her father Yunan - better known as the Tuareg - was forced to emigrate to find work. Shortly afterwards, Yunan's letters stopped arriving and the problems began. Meryem decides to go and find him. Her journey is full of dangers: she survives being shipwrecked and the awful experience of having to negotiate with the mafia (which is extorting money from immigrants) or to be precise, with the mafia boss Abdel Azid… whom, it seems, her father had met on the border…
But perhaps the most emotional and intense part of this story is that it transmits the sadness that comes from leaving behind one's family, customs and traditions.
