To understand the growth of Christianity, one has to be aware of numerous factors which played a part in a complex and troubled process. This book offers critical analysis of a variety of texts. Sociological categories are also included, as this is a social process, as well as anthropological material, as it is important to communicate with different cultures. Ideological and theological aspects must also be considered, because Christianity expressed Jesus' religious experience as interpreted by groups of disciples from very different backgrounds. This collective work examines the origins of Christianity from a critical and interdisciplinary perspective, on the basis that a rigorous reconstruction of its beginnings will provide a strong stimulus for present day Christianity to free itself from heavy burdens, confront unavoidable demands and discover new possibilities.
