“Martin is my best friend. But he’s not like the others. Or at least that’s what the others say. He likes eating strawberries through his nose. He loves wearing shirts with all the buttons done up. And catching bugs in the yard so he can put them in his pocket. And he likes eating nine croquettes at a time, not one more, not one less.” On 21 October 2015, the winner of the Lazarillo Prize’s Picture Book category was decided by the Spanish Organization for Books for Children and Youth People (OEPLI), sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports. The winning work, among the 51 projects presented, was MARTIN. The judges highlighted the harmony between illustration and text, the expressiveness of the characters and the sensitive way that it pays homage to difference and innocence.
